Training for combat is a daily event within the encampment and men-at-arms and archers are always available throughout the day to explain the use of the weapons of the period. Visitors may be invited to try on armour and to handle the accurately reproduced weapons.

An archery display, using longbows and hand made arrows will show how this bow became the deadliest of medieval weapons. Our archers will explain its use in battle.

Our older boys will demonstrate their daily training at the pell using a broadsword. Visitors wishing to try their hand will be invited to do so and will use an accurately reproduced sword to attack the pell under the supervision of the sergeant at arms.

Note that in some circumstances and at some events members of the public will not be permitted to take part in arms training. In adverse weather conditions or other circumstances beyond our control the Master at Arms may decide that combat would be unsafe. Some properties are not suitable for combat due to their religious nature and, where the custodians of that property so request, combat training will not take place.
