Living History
Wander around a tented village savouring the flavour of what life may have been like in 15th century England.

cooking

The tents, of various shapes and sizes, have all been made in known styles of the day, as have the costumes and footwear of all company members. Visitors may watch the cook preparing the midday meal or the herbalist preparing a soothing ointment. Children can play with medieval board games and toys at the tavern. There is always plenty going on in the camp.

Welcome to the website of the
Medieval Free Company

red and white tent

The Medieval Free Company, is a group of families and individuals who all share a common interest in medieval history. We specialise in the recreation of the lifestyle of a group of mercenaries during the Wars of the Roses period. Everything within the camp is recreated, through research, with as much historical accuracy as possible and with materials and methods that would have been available at the time.

You are welcome to contact us for bookings or other enquiries. For details of how to do this please see the Contact page. If you are interested in joining us, full details can be found on the Join page.

Historic Crafts
Visitors to our encampment will be able to see various crafts people at work producing the necessities for everyday life, such as yarn for clothing, flour for baking and pattens, as seen below, for keeping shoes out of the mud.

Defence of king and country requires the skills of our fletcher and our men-at arms, who can all talk knowledgeably (and sometimes at great length!) about their respective trades.
